World GP 2004 in Nagoya Update II
June 6th, 2004 Nagoya Rainbow Hall Nagoya, Japan
Less than 24 hours and K-1 has yet again changed their line-up for the June 6th event according to Sportsnavi. Yesterday, we reported that Gilbert Yvel would be replacing Allister Overeem in his fight against Takeru. Today, Sportsnavi is reporting that Gilbert Yvel is being replaced by K-1 Las Vegas tournament winner Michael McDonald (who is now scheduled to fight Takeru). Next, Tom Erikson will replace Naoufal Iron Leg against Jan Nortje. Also, Alexey Ignashov's opponent has been named and it's former IBF cruiserweight boxing champion "King" Arthur Williams (38-11-1, 27 KO's).
Williams lost his first two bids to become world champion when he lost to then WBA cruiserweight champ Orlin Norris in two consecutive fights (split decision in March and third round TKO in July of 1994). Williams did go on to capture the IBF cruiserweight title in 1998 with a ninth round TKO win over then champion Imamu Mayfield. Then roughly eight months later in 1999, Williams lost his title to Vassiliy Jirov in June via seventh round TKO. Williams does have boxing wins over K-1 veteran Rick Roufus (Feb. ' 97) via fourth round TKO and early UFC vet Art Jimmerson (Jan. ' 99) via first round knockout. Of late, Williams is 1-2 this year, losing his last two bouts - in April to undefeated Vadim Tokarev by unanimous decision and in May to undefeated David Haye via third round TKO.
