Former GC Champ Urijah Faber To Finally Make UFC Debut
Eight-time Gladiator Challenge vet Urijah Faber is now set to make his long-awaited UFC debut. The
promotion announced that Faber will face fellow former WEC champion Eddie Wineland in the co-main event
of UFC 128 on Saturday, March 19th in New Jersey. The fight world is abuzz about finally seeing "The
California Kid" fight on the biggest stage in MMA. It's been a long time coming.
Faber made his pro debut in 2003 for Gladiator Challenge. He ran off nine straight wins, including five in GC.
Then, he ran into Tyson Griffin. In a barnburner of a fight, the two went back and forth until the 3rd round,
when Griffin nailed Faber and earned the TKO win. They say fighters learn more from their losses than their
wins, and Faber certainly came back strong. He went on to win his next thirteen fights in a row, including
his last two bouts in GC. In the WEC, Faber became the WEC Featherweight Champion, and established
himself as the biggest star in that promotion. Now, due to the WEC/UFC merger, he'll have a chance to
make the same mark on the UFC.
"The California Kid" is just another example of the importance of promotions like Gladiator Challenge.
Without it, fighters like Faber and Griffin wouldn't have the opportunity to develop their games. The GC
faithful, loyal to their favorites, are sure to be rooting Faber on at UFC 128.
