It was a milestone event, for
the San Diego MMA promotion, Total Combat. Under the clear sky of Balboa
Park's Starlight Theater, the
five year old event was having it's 30th show. And what a show it was.
Despite
issues with the state athletic
commission, and under the watching eyes of skeptical SDPD officers, Diana
Ocampo and Erick Delfierro
successfully brought Mixed Martial Arts to one of San Diego's most
historic
venues. The all ages event was
packed with fans both young and old. And the card delivered!

Total Combat 30 Recap
By Brian Piepenbrink
The main event featured two
undefeated fighters, Edgar Garcia representing Yuma MMA and Waylon Kennel
fighting out of Unleashed
Training Center. Both men had knock out power but many felt that Kennel's
superior ground game would win
the day. The word "slugfest" is used all too often in the sports world,
but it
is the only word that can
truly describe this fight. The action was intense from the opening bell.
Both men
landed huge shots while Kennel
appeared to be getting the upper hand towards the middle of the round by
pounding Garcia's midsection
with unrelenting knees. However; Garcia managed to keep down his lunch
long
enough to begin cracking
Kennel with a barrage of lefts and rights that knocked kennel out on his
feet. The
crowd went wild as Kennel
refused to fall despite being knocked around like a piņata. Kennel even
managed
to throw a punch for every ten
he took. Finally the ref came in and stopped the bout and saved Kennel
from
his own toughness. Rumor has
it the Kennel was sick prior to the fight, but regardless of who won this
outing, fans can only hope to
see a second act.
Speight and David Garner put
on a grappling clinic. Speight, disappointed due to getting bumped from
the
Affliction card two weeks
prior, decided to take out his frustrations on the all American wrestler.
Despite a
variety of submission attempts
and some decent punches during the brief periods where both fighters were
on their feet, Speight could
not finish the tenacious Gardner. The fight went to a decision in favor of
Speight
who admitted it was his
toughest fight to date.
Many casual fans will say that
the fight of the night was the main event, due to it's uncanny resemblance
to
a Rocky Movie. The more
seasoned vets of MMA will probably point to the Josh Williams, Mike
DelaTorre
fight where the technical back
and forth tested the hearts of both men. Josh Williams, a purple belt
under
Charlie Kohler, went from
position to position as he attempted to submit the game DelaTorre.
However, the
south San Diegan would not go
so quietly into the night as he showed an impressive array of escapes and
even launched some offense of
his own by way of leglock attempts and some ground and pound, which split
open the face of Mr. Williams.
Finally, with both men running on empty, Williams secured a rear naked
choke in the second round.
Like the main event this fight is worthy of a rematch.
The night did have some
surprises. Tony Valarde dispatched Jose Rodriguez quicker than he did in
their first
fight. A hard left hand caught
Rodriguez right on the chin and put him to sleep. The anticipated rematch
between Joshric Fenwick and
Rolando Perez was canceled by the California State Athletic Commission on
medical grounds. And CEO,
Diana Ocampo announced that Total Combat signed a national television deal
and the first televised show
will be September 20th in Yuma Arizona. Overall a terrific night of fights
in
America's Finest City.
